Residents hope for change after audit finds nearly 60,000 pieces of mail delayed at 5 Georgia facilities

GEORGIA – A recent audit by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General found nearly 60,000 pieces of mail delayed at five facilities in Central Georgia.

During the week of Nov. 18 of last year, the Inspector General performed an audit to evaluate efficiency at the Macon Local Processing Center, Gray Main Post Office, Administrative Post Office, Warner Robins MPO and Zebulon Branch.

The recent audit reviewed several areas including delayed mail, package scanning and property conditions.

The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General posted on social media that the audit found that “At all five facilities, we found delayed mail — about 59,890 mail pieces in total.”

In the audit of the Warner Robins Main Post Office, photos show the extent of the delayed mail collection.

The reason cited for the problem was “Management did not provide adequate oversight to verify that all mail was cleared from the unit and the delayed mail was accurately reported in the DCV system.”

“It is a surprise that, that many mail is being hold back,” Dorothy Williams, who lives in Glynn County, said.

Williams said though it’s a surprise that much mail was found to be delayed during the audit, she’s not completely shocked because she experiences mail delays frequently.

“I pray that they should work on getting our mail delivered as it’s supposed to be,” Williams said.

In the findings of the Gray Main Post Office, under the packaging scanning section, the results revealed employees improperly scanned parcels.

In a test, the Inspector General found carriers would scan “Delivery Attempt - No Access to Delivery Location,” but no delivery was actually attempted.

It’s an issue Cormac Kavanaugh who lives in Brunswick, told News4JAX he experienced in an email, and an issue Representative Buddy Carter addressed on his behalf to the postal service in a letter he shared with us.

In the manager’s response to the audit, all facilities agreed to take steps to address the findings.

News4JAX reached out to the postal service for comment and referred us to the “appendix of the report.” We followed up to ask which report we should pull the response from, and at the time of this publication, we hadn’t heard back.
