Man accused of murder in Valentine’s Day shooting that killed man, injured woman at Southside hotel

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was arrested Thursday and accused of murder in connection with a double shooting that left a man dead and a woman injured at a Southside hotel just after midnight on Feb. 14, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police arrested Alvin Douglas Gay, Jr., 33, in connection with the shooting at the Hometown Inn & Suites off Philips Highway in Jacksonville’s Southpoint area.

Just after midnight on Feb. 14, police said they got a call about a person shot near Mustang Road, about a block east of Philips Highway. When officers arrived, they found 25-year-old Francis Bowling Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound.

Bowling died at the scene, according to JSO.

A second victim, identified as 23-year-old Madison West, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

After reviewing evidence and conducting interviews, homicide detectives identified Gay as the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest.

Gay is now charged with murder, attempted murder, armed burglary with assault or battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and tampering with evidence. Gay was taken into custody and booked into the John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility.

Authorities have not released further details on the possible motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting.
