JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was shot by an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday after failing to comply with orders and accelerating his vehicle toward the man attempting to speak with him.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was following up on a 29-year-old man accused of fleeing and attempting to elude after a previous traffic stop about a week ago.

JSO said officers located Michael Youmans in Jacksonville’s Northside on Gossett Street after identifying him from previous bodycam footage.

Sgt. Ben McEwan approached Youmans' vehicle to talk to him, but Youmans drove away and backed his vehicle next to a fence and trailer.

Police followed him while repeatedly asking Youmans to show his hands.

Youmans did not comply, and instead, put the vehicle in reverse as McEwan urged him to stop, police said. He then accelerated his vehicle toward the officer, causing McEwan to shoot at the man multiple times.

Youmans continued past the sergeant until the vehicle came to a stop.

According to JSO, Youmans exited the vehicle on his hands and knees and started crawling. Officers commanded him to get on the ground so they could render aid.

While officers attempted to get him to the ground, Youmans repeatedly said he was dying while asking nearby citizens if he could borrow a cigarette from them.

He was taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition.

According to JSO, Youmans has a lengthy criminal history that includes 13 pages of theft, drug arrests, resisting with and without violence, burglary and more.

McEwan has served with the sheriff’s office for 11 years. This is his first officer-involved shooting and the first officer-involved shooting for JSO this year.

The State Attorney’s Office’s investigation into the incident is ongoing.
