St. Johns County commissioners halt plans for controversial paved trail along Intracoastal Waterway

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – St. Johns County commissioners halted the plans for the three-mile multiuse trail south of St. Augustine, just one year after approving it, according to News4JAX news partners at Jacksonville Today.

The county said this plan dates back to 2006. Some people saw it as something beneficial for the area, while others disagreed.

The following map shows where the three-mile walking and biking trail was set to be built along Shore Drive by the Matanzas River.

The plan is for an eight-foot paved path to span a little more than three miles in the St. Augustine South neighborhood from the Douglas Crane boat ramp to the Moultrie Creek boat ramp on Shore Drive. (Copyright 2024 by WJXT News4JAX - All rights reserved.)

The 8-foot-wide asphalt trail would have connected boat ramps.

According to News4JAX news partners at Jacksonville Today, the total project would cost $1.8 million with $400,000 would have come from grant funding.

The county already spent more than $140,000 on plans and surveys.

Before commissioners approved the plan last March, there was pushback.

Dozens spoke out against the trail saying it could harm the neighborhood’s natural features, and a resident created a petition with up to 500 signatures to stop the project.

County commissioners did not comment on why they stopped the plan for now.
