JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 16-year-old is facing charges after a deadly shooting Thursday morning that forced Westside High School to temporarily go on alert and close the campus.

Alex Reddice is charged with murder and robbery in the shooting at an apartment complex on Firestone Road, across from the high school.

According to his arrest report, Reddice was one of several Westside High students who were hanging out at the home of 51-year-old Carlos Alberto Nieves Rivera before school on Thursday.

The report said the teens were playing Call of Duty at the apartment, but when it was time to leave for school, some altercation happened involving Reddice that ended with Nieves Rivera being shot.

Officers were called around 7:40 a.m. to the complex because of the reported shooting. They found Nieves Rivera suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

The details of the altercation that led to the shooting are blacked out of the arrest report, but Nieves Rivera’s girlfriend told police that he often had the neighborhood boys over in the morning before school and would give them small amounts of marijuana.

She said he’d told her he was going to tell them to “stop hanging out at his home as they were coming too frequently,” according to the report.

The report said investigators found a large amount of marijuana, cash and other illegal narcotics in the apartment after they got a search warrant.

Reddice was identified as the shooter by the other students who were there playing video games and another witness, police said.

A spokesperson with Duval County Public Schools said Westside High School was put on alert “out of an abundance of caution” following the shooting, which was unrelated to the school.

“All students and staff are safe,” the spokesperson said.
