Some Southeast Georgia school districts will remain closed Thursday after winter storm

County-by-county: When Southeast Georgia, Northeast Florida schools will reopen this week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The rare winter storm that dropped snow and ice across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia forced many area school districts to close on Wednesday -- mostly because roads were too hazardous.

With relatively heavy snowfall reported in Brantley, Glynn and Ware counties, those districts announced that they will remain closed on Thursday, as well.

Here’s what we know so far about when local districts will be back up and running:

Southeast Georgia

Camden County

The district will provide an update on Wednesday after it assesses the readiness of roads and buildings for reopening on Thursday.

Brantley County

Due to ice on the roads, all Brantley County schools and office will be closed again on Thursday. The district said ie will work with safety officials and will make a decision about Friday by 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ware County

Due to the ongoing effects of the winter weather event, all Ware County schools and the Central Office will remain closed on Thursday for the safety of students, staff, and families.

The Ware County Emergency Management Agency has requested that everyone stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. Please help ensure the safety of the community by limiting travel during this time.

A decision regarding school operations for Friday will be made on Thursday after further assessment of conditions. The district will share updates through its website, social media, and other communication channels.

Glynn County

Due to icy roads and widespread power outages across the community and schools, Glynn County Schools will remain closed on Thursday.

This closure includes all after-school and athletic activities.

Weather permitting and after a thorough assessment of the school buildings, the district anticipates safely resuming school on Friday.

The district will communicate any updates through ParentSquare, the district website, Facebook page, and media partners.

Pierce County

A decision has not been announced.

Charlton County

Schools are scheduled to be open and on a regular schedule on Thursday.

Northeast Florida

Duval County

Duval County Public Schools will be open and fully operational on Thursday.

The weather is expected to be very cold for the remainder of the week. Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure students are dressed in winter wear appropriate for the conditions.

Clay County

Clay County District Schools announced it will reopen on Thursday.

Columbia County

The district anticipates reopening schools on Thursday but will provide a final confirmation in a follow-up update on Wednesday.

Baker County

The district will resume school on Thursday.

Nassau County

The district spelling bee scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled.

St. Johns County Schools remained open on Wednesday.

Bradford County

Schools and District Offices will reopen Thursday.

Putnam County

Putnam County School District officials said schools will resume as scheduled on Thursday.

Union County

The Union County School District will reopen on Thursday and resume all normal activities.

Clay County

Clay County District Schools will resume normal operations on Thursday. Details regarding a make-up day for the missed instructional hours will be communicated in the near future.

Alachua County

Schools/offices are expected to reopen Thursday. Updates at https://sbac.edu.

The missed day will not have to be made up due to the instructional minutes gained during the 2024-25 school year due to the reduction in the number of early-release Wednesdays for elementary schools.
