JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s snowing in Florida. Yes, you read that correctly.

The Sunshine State is preparing to face its first winter storm since 1989, and parts of the Florida Panhandle began to see snow accumulate on the ground Tuesday afternoon, which social media users are capturing throughout the state by posting videos and images to highlight the rare occurrence.

One of those posts came from Casey DeSantis, wife of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who posted an image of the “Welcome to the Free State of Florida” sign that shows a Florida Highway Patrol car surrounded by snow with more flurries filling the air.

“It’s incredible to think that North Florida is expecting snow, sleet, ice, and extremely cold winds today and tonight!” she said.

Another video in front of the same sign shows drivers moving through the snowfall as the ground and the hoods of cars slowly become fully submerged in white.

This video shows an unrecognizable version of Interstate 10 in Florida’s Panhandle.

Additionally, this video near a Florida Welcome Center shows flurries of snow covering the ground and surrounding palm trees.

As of Tuesday afternoon, around 2 p.m., snow had yet to reach Duval County, however, freezing rain could start accumulating by 11 p.m. and stick to surfaces through Wednesday morning.

In Georgia, snow is expected to start around 7 p.m. and last until 8 a.m. Wednesday, likely north and west of a line around Waycross.

The winter storm is impacting operations throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, including school closures in Duval County, Camden County, and more.
