Warming centers available in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia during dangerous cold weather this week

Where to find a warming center in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia (WJXT)

A severe winter storm brings cold temperatures to Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, with wind chills expected to drop into the teens and 20s.

Residents without adequate heat or shelter are encouraged to seek out warming centers in their area.

Below is a list of available warming centers, categorized by state and county.

Northeast Florida warming centers

Alachua County (Gainesville)

Baker County (Macclenny)

Bradford County (Starke)

Clay County (Green Cove Springs)

Columbia County (Lake City)

Duval County (Jacksonville)

The City of Jacksonville said it will open its warming centers through 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

  • Legends Center: 5054 Soutel Dr., open overnight from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. (Monday-Friday)
  • Jacksonville Public Main Library: 303 N. Laura St. (Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • COJ Libraries and Community Centers: Open during regular business hours starting Tuesday, serving as daytime warming centers.

The city’s non-profit partners at area shelters will also provide cold-weather shelter services to the homeless population. These shelters include:

  • City Rescue Mission: 234 W. State Street in Jacksonville; Check-in at 6:30 p.m.; Shelter will be available until temperatures are at least 40°.
  • Mission House: 800 Shetter Avenue in Jacksonville Beach;
  • Cold Night Shelter: Community Presbyterian, 150 Sherry Drive in Atlantic Beach
  • Sulzbacher Center: 611 East Adams Street in Jacksonville for men; 5455 Springfield Blvd in Jacksonville for women and children. Open for overflow any night that is below 40°.
  • Trinity Rescue Mission: 622 W. Union Street in Jacksonville. Men: check-in at 4 p.m.; women and children: check-in at 1:30 p.m.

Flagler County (Bunnell)

The Sheltering Tree (Rock Transformation Center): 2200 N. State St., open 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. on January 19-21.

    • Bus transportation is available at these pickup locations:
      • East side of the county:
        • Dollar General at Publix Town Center, 3:30 p.m.
        • McDonald’s at Old Kings Rd. South, 4 p.m.
        • Dollar Tree parking lot behind Carrabba’s, 4:30 p.m.
        • Palm Coast Main Branch Library, 4:45 p.m.
      • West side of the county:
        • Dollar General at CR 305 and Canal Ave., 4 p.m.
        • Bunnell Free Clinic, 703 Moody Blvd., 4:30 p.m.
        • Bridges United Methodist Church, 205 N. Pine St., 4:30 p.m.

Nassau County (Fernandina Beach)

Putnam County (Palatka)

Warming centers available at:

    • Leipsic Community Center: 120 E. Main St., Leipsic.
    • Col. Grove Legion: 412 Plum St., Col. Grove.
    • American Legion-Continental: 109 S. 5th St., Continental.
    • Arthur-Lugibihl Community Center: 301 N. Jefferson St., Pandora.
    • Libraries are also suggested as warming spaces.

St. Johns County (St. Augustine)

Brantley County (Nahunta)

Camden County (Kingsland)

Camden County Recreation Center: 1050 Wildcat Dr., Kingsland.

    • Open overnight from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. daily as needed.
    • Look for a “Warming Center” sign next to Chris Gilman Stadium.
    • Residents can sign up for emergency notifications by texting “CamdenCodeRed” to 99411.

Charlton County (Folkston)

Bethune Gym: 204 Mary Bethune Dr., Folkston.

    • Open from 3 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Glynn County (Brunswick)

  • No specific warming center details were provided, but officials are monitoring weather conditions and warning of black ice and freezing temperatures. Residents should follow updates from Glynn County EMA.

Pierce County (Blackshear)

Ware County (Waycross)

  • No specific warming center details were provided, but residents should be aware of the impacts of cold temperatures and potential ice accumulation.
