JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Just a week before Christmas, the home-building process officially began for five homes that will soon be dedicated to veterans and military-connected families in Northwest Jacksonville.
Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville (HabiJax) held its groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday afternoon, which featured comments from the organization’s representatives who hoped to encourage future eligible families to submit applications for its special “Heroes Build” program.

HabiJax said the program “helps address the unique challenges veterans face when it comes to affordable housing,” by providing payment assistance, low interest rates, and paying for closing costs.
One beneficiary of the Heroes Build Homes program, Mia Evans, shared how the program has transformed her life. Speaking to News4JAX, Evans described her experience standing in her new home seven months after moving in.
“It’s so exciting,” Evans said. “To know that these families are going to be able to have this space to call their own—it’s only getting better, it’s only growing better with time.”
The organization plans to complete building all five homes before the end of 2025.
