JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With the holiday season upon us, many people are gearing up for road trips to visit family and friends. Before hitting the road, it’s essential to make sure your car is ready for the journey.

Aaron Nelson, who’s worked in the automotive industry for over 40 years, shared five critical checks every driver should perform to avoid unexpected car troubles.

1. Check Your Battery

Nelson said your car’s battery is one of the most important components to inspect. Sudden temperature changes, whether hot or cold, can affect battery performance, especially if it’s already weak.

“Take note—is it slow to start, does it seem abnormal?” Nelson advised. Look at the cables for corrosion and, if possible, have a shop test the battery’s strength before you travel.

2. Inspect Your Fluids

Fluids are crucial for keeping your vehicle running smoothly. Nelson recommends checking washer fluid, anti-freeze, radiator fluid, and oil. Nelson gave a critical tip: never remove the coolant cap immediately after driving.

“That’s a very good point,” Nelson emphasized. “This is under pressure when the car is hot, and removing the cap too quickly could be dangerous.”

3. Examine Your Wiper Blades

Wiper blades are often overlooked, but they’re essential for safe driving in rain or snow.

“Look for any type of rubber right here, check to find out and see if it’s pliable and soft, feel it, and if it gets hard and firm, it doesn’t wipe smoothly,” Nelson said.

4. Check Your Tires

Your tires are the foundation of your vehicle’s safety. Nelson shared a simple trick to check tread depth using a penny.

Stick the penny in the tire tread and if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head you need to change the tire.

Additionally, check your tire pressure using the chart located on the driver’s door, and don’t forget to inspect your spare tire as well.

5. Test Your Lights

Ensuring all your vehicle’s lights are functioning is vital, especially during shorter daylight hours in winter.

“Turn your headlights on, crank the car up, and walk around the car and make sure they’re all working,” Nelson advised.

He said if you hear a signal clicking faster than normal, that means the system has been interrupted and there’s probably a bulb out.

Bonus Tip: Refer to Your Owner’s Manual

After completing these five checks, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for additional maintenance details specific to your car.

By following these simple steps, you can avoid unnecessary stress and ensure your road trip is both safe and enjoyable. With your vehicle in good shape, you’re ready to hit the road and make holiday memories!
