JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) officer was seriously injured in a traffic crash Monday night on I-95 southbound near Emerson Street. The crash occurred around 9:56 p.m. and temporarily shut down the highway for approximately 90 minutes.
The officer, driving a marked JSO Ford Explorer, was traveling south in the center lane of I-95 on his way home from work. He was not responding to a call, and his vehicle’s emergency equipment was not activated.

According to a report, a four-door Nissan in the same lane was navigating stop-and-go traffic behind a semi-truck. When the semi-truck came to a full stop, the Nissan began to pass it in the right lane. The officer was unable to stop in time and collided with the rear of the Nissan before striking the semi-truck.
Emergency responders transported the officer to a local hospital, where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently in stable condition. Other occupants involved in the crash did not require transportation to the hospital, according to Jacksonville Fire Rescue.
Following the crash, authorities closed I-95 southbound for cleanup and investigation. Traffic was rerouted via the Emerson Street exit, directing drivers to Philips Highway or Spring Park Road and then to University Boulevard for reentry to I-95 South.
The highway reopened after the detour, and an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
