JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The family and friends of Erma Lee Cole gathered around a newly installed sign ordained by city council on Jacksonville’s Westside on Saturday.
Cole’s daughter spoke about the memory of her mother.

“Today we were honoring my mother by having two street signs installed in her memory,” Gail Cole said.
The people of the neighborhood looked to Erma to help with change for the better in the community and in their lives before her passing last year.
Erma Lee Cole worked tirelessly volunteering to improve living conditions such as health, social and economic disparities in her community and Jacksonville.
“This neighborhood was her passion, and she raised seven children and she instilled in us to work hard and to always help others,” Gail Cole said.
She played a role in having an overpass built in her community at the Coastline Railroad which crosses Broadway and McQuade Streets so that children walking to and from school would be safe.
Among her many philanthropic accomplishments, she was awarded the Mayor’s Senior Lifetime Achievement Award for her longtime dedication to improving the quality of life of so many in Jacksonville.
