The April 15 tax deadline is one week away.

If you haven’t filed, you still have time, but don’t wait until it’s too late. If you miss the deadline and don’t ask for an extension you could receive a failure-to-file penalty.

That’s 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month the return is late.

Requesting a tax filing extension gives you six more months to get your paperwork together, but keep in mind, extensions don’t give you more time to pay if you owe taxes.
