Florida’s primary election, how strongly has the GOP solidified its support of Trump?

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. – Tuesday is election day in Florida with the GOP Primary -- although you may not have known it with both Presidential primaries being over before they even began. Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden have secured the delegates to get their party’s nomination.

Now the question about the Florida primary is -- how strongly has the GOP solidified its support for Trump?

There were just a few voters found at polling places.

“My wife made me. I mean I’m going to vote for Trump anyway, there’s only one guy on the ballot really that’s still on the ballot. So why do I need to come? My wife insisted,” Rusty Moye said.

The Duval County Supervisor of Elections said the voting numbers were lower than they even expected with former President Trump already securing the GOP nomination. Jerry Holland told us just before noon on Tuesday that they had seen zero voters at seven polling locations.

“We knew it would be low. We saw a moderate turn out with early voting but this election day is probably the slowest I’ve seen in my time of doing elections,” Holland said.

News4JAX Political Analyst Rick Mullaney estimates Trump needs to get more than 90% of the vote to show he’s secured enough GOP support to feel comfortable in the general election against President Biden.

“While the MAGA base is important and apparently motivated and enough to win the nomination. It’s not enough to win in November, they’ve gotta build on that momentum and the first place to start is with that Haley vote,” Mullaney said.

And on the Democratic side, the state party chose not to have a primary election with Biden already running without any party challengers.
