LaVilla School of the Arts celebrates Black History Month with music, dance & poetry

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The LaVilla School of the Arts Black History Month Club held its annual breakfast, titled Black Excellence Inspires.

The event included musical performances, dance routines and poetry.

“When you say Black history, it kind of reminds me of the days that we went through and why we’re celebrating this day. Because of our freedom and what we accomplished,” Jaziah Drayton, who is in the 6th grade, said.

Students also shared powerful messages from icons, including Dr. Martin Luther Kin g, Jr.’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech.

Students and teachers said it’s important to remember trailblazers and icons in Black history, who made the world a better place.

“We are in a historical area here in Jacksonville downtown. Just to be a part and have our students partake and be a part of history within history is amazing and great,” Teacher Omega Smith said.

The program’s keynote speaker was a representative from the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, who shared a message about overcoming adversity.
