GLYNN COUNTY, GA. – A 58-year-old man is in custody following an overnight officer-involved shooting at a Motel 6 on Scarlett Street, the Glynn County Police Department said.
Officers responded early Saturday for a welfare check related to a domestic violence report. While speaking with the alleged victim, police said the suspect, identified as David Kevin Griffis, opened fire on officers with a handgun.

Three officers returned fire, but none were injured. Griffis then retreated into a motel room and barricaded himself inside, police said.
Crisis negotiators attempted to persuade Griffis to surrender. After he refused, the GCPD SWAT team deployed CS/OC gas canisters into the room and arrested him.
Griffis was taken to the hospital for treatment of gas inhalation, but was not shot during the incident.
Police Chief Scott Ebner requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to review the shooting. GCPD detectives are investigating aggravated assault charges against Griffis, while the department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct an administrative review of the officers’ actions.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call GCPD’s non-emergency line at (912) 554-3645 or submit an anonymous tip through Silent Witness at (912) 264-1333.
