CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – A Camden County teacher was arrested Tuesday after being accused of inappropriate conduct involving a student.
Andrew Medders, 44, who is also a part-time employee with the county’s Emergency Management Agency, is facing a felony charge of sexual assault, according to the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.
Georgia law recognizes sexual assault by persons with supervisory or disciplinary authority as a felony.
According to the Sheriff‘s Office, Medders’ arrest follows a multi-agency investigation.
“We are taking this matter extremely seriously,” said Camden County Sheriff Kevin Chaney. “Our priority is always the safety and trust of our students, staff, and the greater community, and my office is committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation while working closely with our law enforcement partners, the Camden County School system, and the Camden County Board of Commissioners. We will continue to uphold the trust placed in us by the community.”
In a statement to News4JAX, Camden County’s Board of Commissioners confirmed Medders was relieved of his duties with the EMA immediately after his arrest. His status is pending the investigation.
“We are aware of the arrest and are treating this situation with the seriousness it warrants,” said County Administrator Shawn M. Boatright. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and supporting the investigative process. The safety and well-being of our community remain our top priorities.”
The Camden County School System also relieved Medders of all classroom responsibilities. News4JAX reached out to the school district for a statement, and we are still waiting for a response.
The investigation is ongoing; check back with News4JAX as this story develops.
