1 dead, child injured in Camden County shooting, sheriff’s office says

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said a man died Sunday afternoon after he was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the Deerwood Village neighborhood.

Deputies added that a young child was also injured during the shooting, suffering a gunshot wound to the arm, and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Around 1 p.m. on Sunday, Camden County deputies said they responded to a shooting near Harrietts Bluff Road.

When they arrived at the scene, they found the man and a small child each with gunshot wounds.

The man was taken to the hospital, but was later declared dead by medical personnel.

Camden County deputies said there is no one in custody at this time and are continuing to investigate the matter, adding that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

While at the scene News4JAX spoke with a man who identified himself as the father of the child shot and the son of the man who was killed.

He told us he didn’t understand why his father and son were in that neighborhood.

News4JAX also spoke to a neighbor who lived doors down from where the shooting happened.

He says about five minutes after his kids came in the house from getting ice cream from the ice cream man, they heard gunshots.

“I told them stay away from the windows,” he said.

Another neighbor described how after the shooting a few of the neighbors came out of their homes to see what was happening.

“You usually don’t see nothing like that around here. I mean this is a real quiet neighborhood, it’s unusual for stuff like this to happen.”

According to First Baptist Church of Harriets Bluff, the man who was shot is known in the community as “Pastor Joe,” and the child who was shot in the arm was his grandson and is undergoing surgery for his injuries.

“Pastor Joe was a faithful man of God and an accomplished Bible teacher at our church. He will be missed greatly. We are working on getting meals for the family,” the church said. “The events of the day remind us that you could be called to sit with God at any time, so please tell your loved ones that they are cherished every chance you get. May God bless you.”

The church also provided this link to help purchase meals that will be delivered to the pastor’s family.
