Camden County nurse manager Melissa Perkins said she wants this to become a tradition after the health department held its first one last year.

The baby shower is for any new parent out there and newborns from birth to 1 year old.

“We just hope that we are able to show these new parents that there is a lot of community support between healthcare and different organizations in the area that they just maybe did not know about,” Perkins said.

At least 100 people showed up to the first baby shower in March 2024, as Perkins hopes it will be even bigger this time around.

Perkins said some of the items they will give out include bibs, pacifiers and diapers.

There will also be resources for new parents, like postpartum and prenatal pamphlets, along with information on mental health programs available.

Perkins said parents can sit in on special sessions from vendors and other community groups on car seat safety, safe sleep training, and CPR demonstrations.

“The idea is just to get a bunch of different people in one room so that we can all kind of learn from each other,” Perkins said, who has been in her role with the county for seven years.

She said the response she received from the community last year was not only encouraging, but is motivating all those involved to make the community baby shower bigger and better every annually.

“They loved it,” Perkins said. “They thought it was well organized. They thought it was fun. A lot of the parents loved that we did not just get it toward babies. A lot of the stuff was geared toward parents, and not just the baby.”

Those interested in going do not have to register beforehand.
