Freezing rain is expected to begin in Southeast Georgia on Tuesday afternoon, which poses a significant risk of ice accumulation, especially along and north of Interstate 10 toward Homerville, Waycross and Jesup.

That ice accumulation could cause significant power outages Tuesday night, and residents are encouraged to stock winter emergency supply kits for homes and vehicles.

Areas along and north of Waycross in Southeast Georgia have a medium chance (40-50%) of seeing up to 1 inch of snow.

There is also a low chance (5-15%) of up to 3 inches of snow north and northwest of Waycross, which could lead to major impacts.

The Georgia Department of Transportation spent several days brining roads from interstates I-95 in Glynn and Camden counties.

The department added that Georgia DOT snowplow crews are prepared to work to clear roads once precipitation begins to fall, however, crews cannot clear roads that are packed with vehicles.

Remember if you see a salt, brine or plow trucks, make sure not to crowd the plow and give them at least 100 feet of space.

The Coastal Health District in Georgia announced that all operations will be suspended at 12 p.m. Tuesday and will remain suspended Wednesday.

Officials anticipate a delayed opening on Thursday at 11 a.m. This includes all health department clinics and offices in Camden and Glynn, counties.

Anyone with an appointment previously scheduled during the closure will be contacted to reschedule.

Brantley County

Brantley County Emergency Management warned residents that a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected to impact Southeast GA, including areas along U.S. Highway 84, from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon.

With temperatures dropping and dangerous conditions likely on the roads, it’s important to stay prepared.

Key actions to take:

  • Stock up on food, water, and winter clothing
  • Check vehicle supplies and consider adjusting travel plans
  • At home, allow faucets to drip, open cabinet doors to prevent freezing pipes, and use flashlights instead of candles
  • Keep an eye on updates as forecasts can change. Prepare now and stay informed to keep your family and community safe.

Schools

Brantley County schools will be OPEN on Tuesday but will dismiss early at 2 p.m.

Because of road safety concerns, the district’s schools will be closed on Wednesday.

County government and city offices will be closed to the public on Wednesday and will operate with essential personnel only.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Public Works Department was loading trucks with sand. It also put a digital road board warning people about the storm.

Chuck White, Camden County Emergency Management Director, said the department has been doing a lot planning and resourcing over the last three days.

“The two big hazards for me are going to be icy conditions on the roads, which will make it unsafe for driving at some point late overnight into early morning and potentially through the day tomorrow on Wednesday,” White said. “The other big concern for me, at a high level, is the potential that we’re going to have rain accumulation freezes on branches. Those branches come down, it impacts power transmission, and we get power outages.”

White also said they want people to be safe in their homes so they encourage people not to light candles and keep space heater safety in mind.

Residents are encouraged to prepare their homes, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather. Stay tuned to official communication channels for further updates or emergency instructions.
