Gov. DeSantis announces permanent back-to-school sales tax holiday

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a permanent back-to-school sales tax holiday that he said will benefit families statewide starting this August.

Unlike previous temporary tax holidays, this new law establishes an annual sales tax exemption for the entire month of August, giving parents and caregivers more flexibility and savings when purchasing essential school supplies.

Key features of the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday:

  • Tax-free purchases on most school supplies under $50
  • Clothing, footwear, and apparel tax exemption for items priced up to $100
  • Personal computers and eligible accessories for non-commercial use are tax-free up to $1,500

DeSantis highlighted that this policy reflects Florida’s commitment to supporting taxpayers, education, and family well-being.

Taylor Hatch, Secretary for the Department of Children and Families, praised the policy for addressing the diverse needs of caregivers, including grandparents, foster parents, and single mothers.

DeSantis emphasized that Florida continues to lead the nation in economic growth, education freedom, and talent development, with policies like this tax holiday contributing to its rankings.

The back-to-school sales tax holiday begins Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 31 annually unless repealed by the Legislature, offering ongoing relief and support to Florida families for years to come.
