Communications Professor Courtney Lewis explained what employers are really looking for.

“Most companies are going to do some type of social media, research on their potential candidates, and they’re going to look for things that don’t meet their standards,” Lewis said.

So, what’s a red flag? Lewis said too much partying, negative opinions, and controversial topics can work against you.

“They want to make sure that they’re a good fit culturally for the company. They want to make sure that they aren’t a liability to the company,” explained Lewis.

Checking someone’s social media is easier than you think. A simple Google search can reveal your X, Instagram, Facebook and even LinkedIn.

“LinkedIn is definitely going to be the one that is most scrutinized,” said Lewis.

So, what can you do? First, review your privacy settings, then delete old controversial posts, highlight your professional skills, and think before you post.
