JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – More than a quarter (26%) of Floridians are preparing to travel as spring break approaches.
However, with costs rising year after year, it’s becoming more challenging to enjoy a getaway without breaking the bank. According to AAA, the average roundtrip airfare for domestic flights this season has surged to $820, marking a 7% increase from last year.

Hotel prices have also jumped 8%, making it even more important for travelers to plan carefully. Rental car prices are fluctuating, but in high-demand areas they remain expensive.
There are some destinations that are still affordable. Ashley Avery from First Florida Credit Union recommends setting a realistic budget and taking advantage of low-cost or free activities to make the most of a quick getaway out of town.
Avery’s advice:
- Smaller beach towns or state parks offer great experiences at lower costs
- Road trips can be more affordable than flying
- International destinations where the U.S. dollar is strong, such as Mexico or Central America, may offer better value
- Many cities offer free walking tours, museums, and outdoor attractions
- Local festivals and events can be a great way to enjoy a destination without extra costs.
- Beach days and exploring nature are great budget-friendly activities.
The best way to create a travel budget is to start by determining total available funds -- savings, expected expenses, and any additional spending money. Don’t overlook the small costs like snacks, rideshares, baggage and resort fees.
Break the budget into key categories:
- Transportation
- Lodging
- Food
- Entertainment
- Emergency funds
Avery also recommends avoiding overspending on impulse purchases like souvenirs, extra excursions, or relying too heavily on credit without a repayment plan.
You can use credit cards effectively while traveling. Avery recommends using a travel rewards or cashback credit card to maximize benefits on purchases.
Just set a spending limit before the trip and track purchases daily.
