Tax season officially begins on Monday, January 27, as the IRS starts accepting and processing tax returns from the previous year.
If you earned less than $79,000 last year, you’re likely eligible for free filing.
You can use online options including Turbo Tax and Tax Slayer. Individuals can also file directly with the IRS using its “Direct File” program. Just go to IRS.gov.

It will ask you five questions, including your income and savings, to determine if you are eligible.
The IRS says taxpayers will see their refunds within three weeks of filing if they choose to receive it through direct deposit.
Once your return is accepted, you can track your refund’s progress. Just click on the ‘Where’s My Refund’ on the IRS website.
The deadline to file is April 15.
If you think you will need more time, you can request a six-month extension. To do so, you need to fill out Form 48-68 which you can also find on IRS.gov.
Keep in mind that even if you don’t file on time, you still have to pay any taxes you owe by April 15.
