Trouble in Toyland: 3 things to consider before buying a holiday toy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As you shop for toys for the child in your life -- beware of Trouble in Toyland.

Not only do you want them to love the gift, you also need to take certain steps to make sure it is safe for them and any other children who live in the home.

News4Jax reporter Jennifer Waugh explains the things you should always do when considering which toy to buy.

  1. Be sure to find the age recommendation listed on the toy. That may not be as easy if you’re shopping online, but the consumer product safety commission says it’s critical you follow this recommendation if you are buying for a child who is a specific age.
  2. When giving a toy, be sure to check who else lives in the home. If a child has a younger sibling, you should assume that child will also play with the gift and it could pose a risk if certain precautions are not taken.
  3. There have been cases where recalled toys are still on the market. Flemming said you should always check to make sure a toy you are considering is not on the toy recall list. Check to see if a toy you’re considering is on the recall list by downloading the consumer product safety commissions app.
