Watching holiday movies is a cherished tradition for many this time of year, but why do we enjoy these festive flicks so much?“
“Holiday movies offer an escape from stressors this time of year, like hosting and preparing a big meal. When I sit down to watch a holiday movie, I don’t have to worry about any of that,” said Dr. Chivonna Childs, a psychologist for Cleveland Clinic.
Along with offering an escape, Childs said the magic of a holiday movie can boost the feel-good chemicals in our brains like serotonin.
Childs explained these movies are comforting because the characters are easy to connect with, and we can always count on the fairytale ending that comes along with them.
They can also evoke feelings of nostalgia and remind us of fond holiday memories.
Childs added that cozying up by the fireplace to watch your favorite film each year can be a great family bonding experience as well.
But once the holiday movie marathons are over, Childs encourages people to continue looking for other ways to spark joy this time of year–even amid the colder weather.
“Keeping up with our hobbies and finding new things to do in the wintertime is important. For example, I love to golf. While I can’t really play golf outside in the wintertime, I can instead play simulated golf inside,” Childs said. “You need to try and find ways to keep your routine going and continue doing the things you love even in the wintertime.”
