Northwest Jacksonville barbershop needs community’s help for annual Christmas Party

Cutz Linez and Trimz holds the party to give back to underserved kids

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The annual Community Christmas party for a Northwest Jacksonville barbershop is days away.

For the past nine years, the Cutz Linez and Trimz Barbershop on Moncrief Road and the nonprofit Jewels of the Future have helped children in underserved communities receive Christmas gifts.

The organizations collect toys and clothing to give to hundreds of children living in the 32208 and 32209 Zip codes at the annual Christmas Party.

Barbershop owner and nonprofit president, Renita Turner, understands people are facing financial hardships.

“It’s the special time of year when kids want to be appreciated. They just want to be kids. They want toys. They want gifts,” Turner said. “They want to experience Christmas. They don’t understand the hardships.”

Last year, an estimated 500 people came to the Christmas Party. Children went home with bags of new toys and clothing.

Just weeks before the Christmas party, donations flowed in from all over the city.

This year’s party is scheduled for Dec. 15, and the donations are scarce — two bags of toys, several pairs of shoes, and 20 boxes of school uniform pants.

“This year, we need so much help,” Turner said.

They are looking for items such as:

  • Toys for smaller children
  • Clothing
  • Gift cards
  • Headphones

Attorney Stephen A. Smith has been a long-time sponsor of the party. Despite his financial support, it’s still not enough.

“To whom much is given, much is required of. So, for those who can do for those who have less, we need to give back during this time to truly make this a Merry Christmas,” Smith said.

“A lot of these kids in this area are already struggling with everyday issues like crime and violence. Those things in this area are like PTSD for these children, so they need outlets. They must have something outside of what they see every day,” Turner said.

Turner said no matter the outcome, as long as the barbershop is open, she will continue to provide for her community.

The Christmas Party is Sunday, Dec. 15, from noon to 3 p.m. at the barbershop on 6050 Moncrief Road.
