Hurricane Melissa made landfall in eastern Cuba near the city of Chivirico early Wednesday as a Category 3 storm after striking Jamaica on Tuesday as the strongest Category 5 to ever hit the island.
The National Hurricane Center expects Melissa to intensify further today before fluctuating in strength as it approaches Jamaica.
Melissa is expected to reach hurricane strength by Saturday and become a major hurricane by the end of the weekend.
As of the 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the center of the newly formed Melissa was located about 300 miles south of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.
