Tropical storms warnings dropped as Eta passed over Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Eta was barely handing onto tropical storm strength as it was moving over Jacksonville at 10 a.m., according to the National Hurricane Center. As the NHC put the center of the storm 10 miles southwest of Jacksonville and it was moving north-northeast at 15 mph. By 1 p.m., the stormโs sustained winds were down to 40 mph as it was moving off the coast near Fernandina Beach and moving to the north-northeast at 15 mph. By 4 p.m. Eta was 90 miles south-southwest of Charleston, South Carolina. Greater Jacksonville was forecast to see gusts up to 40 mph and bands of tropical rain, but winds nor rainfall didnโt reach near those totals for most of the area.

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, veterans and active service members can go into any U.S. Great Clips salon and get either a free haircut or a free haircut card to use later. In addition, non-veteran customers who get a haircut service on Veterans Day at Great Clips salons can pay it forward. They receive a free haircut card they can give to an active service member or veteran as a token of thanks. Couple discovers, returns WWII veteranโs keepsakes to family
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ One local couple found some important items belonging to a World War II veteran and vowed to get them to their family member if possible. โI found the flag; she found the family,โ Lloyd Hyatt said of his wife, Melissa. Lloyd, a veteran himself, knew the flag was oddly placed and didnโt belong in that shop. Melissa reached out to several of Smithโs family members via Facebook to try and connect with them to get the items to their rightful owners. And we were so glad that didnโt happen," Lloyd Hyatt said.
Jacksonville Urban League dedicates mural honoring Black service members
โI think itโs very significant that itโs going to be dedicated on Veteranโs Day because it deals with veterans,โ Walden said. One painting honors the Harlem Hellfighters during World War I. Another shows the service by Black women. Another pays tribute to World War II, with Doris โDorieโ Miller at the forefront. โI think that would help end some of the racism problems that we have in this country,โ Walden said.

Norโeaster starts off the week and ends with tropical rain
Tropical Storm Eta moves across the Florida Keys late tonight and into the eastern Gulf tomorrow. It will be wetter Monday with increasing showers as tropical moisture moves in with the potential for some locally heavy rainfall around the coastal areas. We keep rain around Tuesday and possibly into Veterans Day as rounds of showers pass quickly in the moist flow. Winds will decrease Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure moves to the east and guides Tropical storm Eta through the Keys and into the Gulf where it wanders next week off the west Florida coast. Rain totalsIf this track plays out, the wettest day would be Thursday evening and Friday morning with 1-2 inches of rain.
50 veterans honored with kayaking, barbecue & tailgate
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ To honor Veterans Day and thank local veterans for their service, Academy Sports and Outdoors partnered with Bama-Q to provide the Northeast Florida Chapter of Heroes on the Water a free lunch and tailgate after a morning kayak fishing trip. Bama-Q pitmasters prepared a three course Florida-inspired seafood meal and Captain Rick Murphy of the Florida Insider Fishing Report surprised the veterans with a video message thanking them for their service. The event took place Saturday afternoon at Brownโs Creek Fish Camp. Academy also donated kayaks and other fishing equipment to the organization.
Jacksonville honors heroes with annual Veterans Day Parade
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The River City honored and thanked the men and women whoโve made great sacrifices in service to our country with its annual Veterans Day Parade. Wounded Warrior Project, Vietnam Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, the Florida National Guard and Northeast Florida Women Veterans were just a few of the dozens of organizations that participated. Residents could attend in person or watch the event on TV, with WJXT Channel 4 airing the Veterans Day Parade live. Those who attended were encouraged to maintain social distancing and wear red, white and blue to support veterans. World War II veterans honored in Florida's capital
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - For the past five years, Altrua, a business in the state's capital city, has picked a hometown hero to honor during the Veterans Day parade. This year, there were two, both of whom are World War II veterans. "It's just amazing what these guys did during that period of time and they weren't ever asked to do it. This year's selection of veterans of the Second World War was no coincidence. The country loses about 350 WWII veterans each day, and the Department of Veterans Affairs predicts the last will be gone by 2044.

WWII veteran gets high school diploma at 95

Lewie Shaw was awarded the diploma on Thursday during a Veterans Day ceremony at Claremore High School in Oklahoma. Shaw was orphaned at 12, dropped out of high school at 17 and worked as a school bus driver and a janitor before joining the Marines in 1943, the station reported. "One come out with a phosphorus grenade got me across the backside," he told KJRH.
