ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Meet Tilly 💕 She’s part of St. Augustine’s Shelter Diversion Program and is searching for a safe, loving home. Tilly is between 3–5 years old, spayed, and will be microchipped soon.
Tilly arrived at SAHS as part of a group of 17 Yorkies and other toy breeds after their breeder passed away without clear arrangements for their care. She will be spayed prior to placement so she can enjoy life as a beloved pet—never again viewed as an asset used for breeding.
The St. Augustine Humane Society (SAHS) is often asked to explain its animal shelter diversion programs. These initiatives—sometimes called intake diversion or pet retention programs—provide critical resources and support to pet owners to prevent unnecessary animal surrender and help reduce euthanasia rates.
Through these programs, families may receive assistance such as free pet food, medical care, behavioral training, or temporary housing. By addressing challenges before they reach a crisis point, diversion programs help keep pets with the people who love them or ensure they are safely rehomed without entering a traditional shelter. This approach also helps ease overcrowding and strain on animal shelters and partner agencies.
February is National Pet Dental Health Month, and SAHS is using this time to highlight its Share the Love online auction. This fundraiser gives supporters the chance to help pets in need while bidding on something special for themselves or a loved one. Visit www.sahsauction.org to participate. All proceeds directly benefit pets who require extensive and often life-changing dental surgery.
