Drought continues across our area as Thanksgiving week brings only spotty showers

Cooler temperatures move in after rare November dry spell

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – If you’ve been hoping for a good soaking rain, this isn’t it. We’re now going through the 16th driest November on record for Jacksonville, and as your News4JAX Weather Authority meteorologist, I have to say—it’s bad out there. So far, not a drop of rain for the month.

There’s a slight 20 percent chance for a shower today, but don’t expect it to put a dent in those dry conditions. You’ve probably noticed burn bans popping up and the lawns looking a little desperate. As always, try to conserve water wherever you can—Mother Nature’s not helping us out much this week.

Cold front brings Thanksgiving chill

The other big story is the weather pattern flip coming just in time for Thanksgiving. A cold front is pushing in, and as it sweeps through, it will bring in drier air and much cooler temperatures by Thursday. You’ll definitely feel the change, especially if you’ve gotten used to these 80-degree afternoons.

For your Thanksgiving plans—think about grabbing that extra sweater before you head out. The high is expected to reach only 66 degrees on Turkey Day, with mostly sunny skies and a fall feeling finally settling in. If you’re planning to head to the beach or fry up that turkey outdoors, it’ll be cooler and less muggy, with winds staying pretty light.

Fog that lingered earlier this week shouldn’t be much of a problem, and your holiday travel and family football games are looking good and dry.

Weekend temperatures and rain outlook

This snap of cold won’t last too long. Temperatures start out below average through Saturday, with highs in the upper 50s and upper 60s, but a quick warm-up returns by Sunday. The Exact Track 4D radar shows another cold front rolling in late in the weekend, which brings a small 20 percent rain chance on Sunday—but again, don’t expect any big soakers.

We’re watching for another potential warm-up as we move into early December, but it’s still too early to lock in those numbers. For now, plan on chilly mornings and comfortable afternoons for your weekend.

For the garden lovers out there, keep those hoses handy—a brief sprinkle might show up, but most yards in our area will still be thirsty.
