JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – We’ve got a Freeze Warning in place for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia—so let’s talk about what that means for you and your family.
The warning will be in effect from 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday. The coldest air is forecast to settle in between 2 and 8 a.m., dropping wind chills down into the teens and 20s. It’s going to feel a lot colder than what we’re used to in our area.
Be sure to bring pets and plants inside tonight. It’s just too cold and inhumane to leave them out in these conditions, even if you’re used to Florida’s milder winters.
Wind chills and temperature drops
Let’s talk temperatures. Right now, we’re sitting in the 40s and 50s around Jacksonville, but the wind is making it feel colder. You’ll notice it as soon as you step outside. We’re seeing steady winds in the teens and twenties, with gusts reaching into the mid-20s to 30s.
These strong winds will push wind chills below freezing by midnight tonight. By the time you wake up, it could feel like the teens or low 20s, especially in outlying neighborhoods. While folks up in Chicago might laugh, this is “Florida cold”—and it can be a real shock if you’re not bundled up.
That’s why you’ll probably want those heated car seats on, and maybe an extra blanket or two ready to go.
Staying safe and warm at home
I know a lot of people are thinking about their heating bills right now. With the economy the way it is, keeping the house warm can be a real struggle. If you’re turning to space heaters, please make sure to keep them away from draperies or anything that might catch fire.
JEA is out there to help if you need extra support, so don’t hesitate to reach out to local resources.

And remember, it’s not just about keeping you warm—protect your people, your pets, and your plants as the cold moves in tonight and into tomorrow morning.
