JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A round of showers and storms that moved across our area prompted a Weather Authority Alert Day on Sunday. People in that area saw hours of rain, with amounts up to an inch. Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties were under a tornado warning for parts of Sunday afternoon as showers and stormes pushed through. There were some reports of downed trees near State Road 13A and some flooding on County Road 65. AdThe Weather Authority Alert Day ended shortly before 6 p.m., and showers will fade Sunday night.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Wind gusts overnight prompted a few hundred power outages across Northeast Florida as Tropical Storm Eta swept over the state, but there were minimal reports of damage impacting residents here. As of 10 a.m. Thursday, a few outages in Jacksonville left a couple dozen customers without power, according to JEA. Clay Electric reported there were three dozen customers in the dark in Clay County, along with over 170 in Putnam County and more than 300 in Alachua County. We are watching a large area of showers and thunderstorms, located over Guinea and Sierra-Leone, Africa, is associated with a vigorous tropical wave. Environmental conditions are expected to be marginally conducive for some development of this system while the wave enters the extreme eastern Atlantic on Friday. Tracking The TropicsLooking AheadThe concern with these systems is the environmental conditions these storms will be entering may be conducive to development. Another factor that may lead to more conducive conditions for development is the weaker wind shear.

The Weather Authority is keeping a close eye on a tropical wave located a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The cluster of thunderstorms has a 40% chance of development in the next 2 days and 50% chance over the next 5 days. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry and Steve Woodard, director of the city’s Emergency Preparedness Division, said during a virtual news conference Tuesday that they are monitoring a disturbance that the National Hurricane Center said is forecast to become a tropical storm before reaching the Leeward Islands. I’ve said it before, we’ve been through multiple storms, hurricanes together the five years that I’ve been in office. “That will likely require us to open more shelters, but we have that excess capacity. Depending on the numbers, if we have to open specific shelters just for COVID patients, we’ll do that,” Woodard said. “So to remind people, this is a good time to get your kids ready, be prepared for a storm.

That brings us to the next possible storm system. Designated 92L by the National Hurricane Center this large but organized system continues to swirl its way westward towards the Leeward Islands. If this develops as expected it would become the ninth tropical depression of the season and Tropical Storm Isaias. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon and will provide more information about the current state of the disturbance. Regardless of development, locally heavy rain is likely across portions of the Lesser Antilles beginning later today and continuing through Wednesday, especially in the Leeward Islands.

The good news is a newly developed potential tropical cyclone is not expected to become a hurricane, but unfortunately, it does look like rain and tropical storm force winds are possible along its path toward Florida by the weekend. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Puerto Rico, including Vieques, and Culebra, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is moving toward the west near 23 mph should continue during the next few days. All but two forecast models keep the tropical wave from becoming a hurricane. Land interaction with Puerto Rico and Hispaniola could also disrupt organization.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Weather Authority is tracking a tropical wave drifting towards the Bahamas and the National Hurricane Center gives it a 30% chance of development this week. Locally we expect this tropical wave to increase our rain chances starting on Wednesday, subsequently lowering our temperatures. Wind gusts will most likely not be an issue- we have seen stronger wind gusts within our afternoon thunderstorms than we will see with the tropical wave. Our rain chances will increase Thursday as the wave is nearby. Our chances for rain will decrease as we head into the weekend and the tropical wave pulls further away from us.
