Hundreds of thousands of people are expected at this weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day parade in Kansas City, where they should expect much tighter security measures than in past years due to last month’s deadly mass shooting at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration.

(AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden marked St. Patrick’s Day on Wednesday by recommitting the U.S. to the Good Friday Agreement, which has come under increasing stress following the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union. Before the meeting, the president attended a morning Mass at the aptly named St. Patrick’s Church near his family home in Wilmington, Delaware, then returned to the White House to partake in the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, which were toned down due to the coronavirus pandemic. In keeping with recent tradition, the water in fountains outside the White House ran green for the day. Biden and Martin also emphasized their commitment to addressing global challenges and combating the coronavirus, among other issues, the White House said.
Savannah expects St. Patrick’s crowds, possible virus surge
Revelers prepare to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in one of Savannah's historic squares in 2019. SAVANNAH, Ga. – The South’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade is canceled, as is the boozy riverside festival that accompanies it. Likewise, Savannah City Hall withheld a permit for the sprawling St. Patrick’s festival that’s typically a magnet for beer-fueled revelry along the city’s riverfront promenade of bars and souvenir shops. “We take safety very seriously and will encourage attendees to comply with all City of Savannah requirements and CDC guidelines.”Savannah’s mayor says police will be enforcing a citywide mask mandate among St. Patrick’s crowds, with violators facing possible $500 fines. City Hall hasn’t been alone in pushing for increased caution during St. Patrick’s Day events.

Morton)SAVANNAH, Ga. – With Savannah’s 197-year-old St. Patrick’s Day parade canceled for a second straight year, organizers of the Irish celebration plan to move several smaller events online. The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee isn’t giving up completely on 2021. They include the greening of the wrought iron fountain in Forsyth Park, where the gushing of green-dyed water each year signals the beginning of St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The committee will also stream video of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist that traditionally comes right before the parade. Fogarty said the committee looks forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in person again in 2022.
Can you fathom no St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at pubs in Ireland?
A St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland without celebrations at local pubs? Yes, it is true, and just the latest example of how serious the coronavirus pandemic has become. The Irish government sent a release Sunday asking all pubs be closed from Sunday night until March 29 to help quell the spread of the coronavirus. St. Patrick’s Day celebrations surely will be affected around the world, and it’s hard to imagine you can’t even go to a pub in the heart of Ireland anymore to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. But that once again emphasizes the seriousness of the pandemic and the sacrifices so many are making.
