Less than two weeks after impacts from Hurricane Helene destroyed some of the remaining concrete balustrades in Memorial Park, neighbors are once again preparing for more impacts. The balustrades are lined against the bank, separating the park from the St. Johns River.

In the hours after Jacksonville residents felt the impacts of Hurricane Helene, people were surprised to find Riverside’s Memorial Park was blocked off Friday morning.

Northeast Florida started to feel the effects of powerful and wide Hurricane Helene on Thursday night as the Category 4 storm made its way closer to the Gulf Coast.

There is still a very visible reminder of that storm at Memorial Park in the Five Points neighborhood. Barriers and caution tape are up along the waterfront after waves broke up several balustrades.

Members of Jacksonville’s Venezuelan community gathered Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park, for a peaceful protest.

Intron Technologies, Inc. was selected by the City of Jacksonville as the contractor for the Memorial Park balustrade replacement project, the Memorial Park Association announced on Thursday. Memorial Park is a gem and one of the Citys flagship parks, said Randy DeFoor, City of Jacksonville District 14 Councilmember. We are delighted the Citys balustrade restoration project will utilize a local firm, Intron Technologies, to create the iconic balustrade. The iconic balustrade in Memorial Park was irreparably damaged during Hurricane Irma in September 2017.
