Fast-forward hundreds of years, African Americans can now find out where their maternal ancestors came from before slavery through DNA testing by African Ancestry. “The community created African Ancestry. “We sequence the DNA to examine the individual genetic profile,” said Dr. Rick Kittles, co-founder and scientific director of African Ancestry. (Jenese Harris)After swabbing my jaw and waiting for the results, I have the answer: I share a maternal genetic ancestry with Fulani people living in Nigeria. “I’m excited about your results, Jenese, because I also share maternal genetic ancestry with Fulani people in Nigeria,” Paige said.

What is the CROWN Act? Why is a law needed to protect Black women’s right to wear natural hair?

Decades later, as they entered the workforce, most were told they could not wear their hair in its natural state. A recent study by Dove found black women are 80% more likely to change their natural hair to conform to social norms or expectations at work. While these News4Jax reporters now wear natural hair on air at WJXT, some employers still limit the hairstyle of African-Americans and there is no law in place to protect their right to wear their hair the way God created it. The CROWN Act -- an acronym for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair -- makes it illegal to deny employment or educational opportunities based on hair in California in 2019. Pringle is moved when viewers contact her and let her know that her natural hair has an impact.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – One of the most high-profile child murder cases in Jacksonville history is back in the headlines as an attorney representing convicted killer Donald Smith argued before the state Supreme Court on Wednesday that Smith should get a new trial. Kuritz said the prosecutor violated the “golden rule” that jurors can’t be asked to put themselves in the victim’s shoes when she said: “And from the grave, she is crying out to you: ‘Donald Smith raped me. Donald Smith sodomized me. “The state openly admits that these autopsy photographs of a heinous, atrocious and cruel murder are heinous. Walmart surveillance video shows Cherish walking out front door with Donald Smith.

Florida Supreme Court takes up appeal in Cherish Perrywinkle murder case

Read full article: Florida Supreme Court takes up appeal in Cherish Perrywinkle murder case

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments this week about whether a man sentenced to death in the slaying of an 8-year-old girl should receive a new trial. Attorney H. Kate Bedell wrote in a brief this year at the Supreme Court that Circuit Judge Mallory Cooper erred in denying a change of venue. While at Walmart, Smith said he would buy the family cheeseburgers at a McDonald’s at the store but left with Cherish Perrywinkle in a van. Smith’s appeal to the Supreme Court seeks a new trial and raises a series of issues, including arguing that the circuit judge erred by allowing autopsy photos of Cherish Perrywinkle to be used during the trial. “So I hope to God and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they won’t allow that appeal.”News4Jax reached out to the mother and father of Cherish Perrywinkle.
