An Army sergeant accused of shooting five fellow soldiers at a Georgia base has been charged by the military with attempted murder.

The Department of Justice on Friday accused two Georgia parents, including an enlisted soldier who was living at the Fort Stewart Military Reservation, of starving their daughter to death.

Six soldiers at a Georgia Army base are being hailed as heroes for tackling a fellow soldier accused of shooting five people.

An Army sergeant who is from Jacksonville opened fire at Fort Stewart in Georgia on Wednesday, shooting five soldiers and prompting a brief lockdown at one of the country’s largest Army bases, officials said.

Georgia is creating a $750,000 grant program to support mental health programs for military service members, veterans and their families.

The 20-year-old soldier, also known as Cole Gonzales, was with the Third Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia, when he thought he was communicating with the Islamic State online about the terrorism plots, Biase said. They said he expressed his support for the Islamic State group and jihad on social media before he began communicating in October with an FBI employee who posed as an Islamic State group supporter in contact with the group's fighters in the Middle East. According to court papers, he expressed his frustration with the U.S. military and his desire to aid the Islamic State group. The criminal complaint said he then provided training and guidance to purported Islamic State fighters who were planning attacks, including advice about potential targets in New York City, including the 9/11 Memorial. This month, according to the complaint, Bridges sent a video of himself in body armor standing before an Islamic State flag, gesturing support.

Ian Hitchcock/Getty Images(CNN) - Three US soldiers with the 3rd Infantry Division were killed and three others injured during a training accident at an Army base in Georgia early Sunday morning, according to the Army. The soldiers were in riding in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield when the accident happened. Three soldiers were pronounced dead on site and three others were taken to Winn Army Community Hospital for their injuries. The accident is under investigation, and the soldiers' names will be released 24 hours after their next-of-kin are notified, Fort Stewart said in a statement. Fort Stewart, founded in 1940, is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River and covers almost 280,000 acres, according to its website.
