Hurricane season officially started on June 1st. To prepare, emergency officials recommend families have enough food for seven days in the event of a storm.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Vice President Kamala Harris visited Jacksonville on Monday as part of the Biden administration’s “Help is Here” tour of the nation promoting the $1.9 trillion relief package. She visited the federally-run Gateway Mall vaccination site before stopping by a Northwest Jacksonville food distribution warehouse. “I’m glad to be in Jacksonville,” Harris said. “Tap away!”Jennifer Chase was getting her second shot as Harris came to the Gateway site and talked to the people getting shots. Harris visited last visited Jacksonville in October for a socially-distanced rally at the University of North Florida in advance of the November election.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The need for food is increasing amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to Feeding Northeast Florida. King said food donations are also down heading into the holiday season. “I would say that our food donations are significantly down,” said King. “Luckily, we have been able to provide food through the USDA CFAP (U.S. Department of Agriculture Coronavirus Food Assistance Program). According to the organization, $1 can help provide six meals.

Feeding Northeast Florida has seen two or three times as many households seeking food assistance. Typically, Feeding Northeast Florida receives donations from food distributors and grocery store chains. The need for food in Northeast Florida has enhanced in the last six months due to the pandemic. Feeding Northeast Florida said this donation will help a lot of people on the First Coast. Feeding Northeast Florida is holding nearly 45 drive-thru food pantries a week to keep up with the needs of area residents, but Tuesday’s event was a bit different. Winn-Dixie paired up with Feeding Northeast Florida and helped provide groceries for more than 400 families at the Paxon Revival Center. It lightens my burdens … Winn-Dixie is Jacksonville’s backbone,” said one woman at the event. Winn-Dixie has not set a date for its next food pantry event but says it will be around the holiday season. Feeding Northeast Florida says it will be hosting a drive-thru food pantry on Thursday at Redemption Church on Lane Avenue.

That ripple effect caused millions to lose their jobs, and the unemployment system wasn’t enough to rescue unemployed workers from falling into the condition of food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of a lack of money and other resources. “When you break it right down, food insecurity is that you don’t know where your next meal will come from,” Feeding Northeast Florida CEO Susan King said. It shows 125,000 more people in the region will fall into the condition of food insecurity by November. Putting it into numbers, prior to the pandemic, Feeding Northeast Florida was processing about 50,000 pounds of food every day.

Cowford Chophouse and national egg producer Cal-Maine Foods have come to the rescue for the Jacksonville-based charity, donating 1.2 million eggs in the last three months. Thursdays donation of 312,000 eggs was the fourth made by the partners to Feeding Northeast Florida. The donation from Cowford Chophouse and Cal-Maine Foods will help Feeding Northeast Florida continue to address food insecurity and poverty through awareness, advocacy, education and action. Jacques and Tracy Klempf, co-owners of the Cowford Chophouse, have a long-standing relationship with Feeding Northeast Florida. In Florida, Cal-Maine has donated over 6,500,000 eggs, this year, including those to Feeding Northeast Florida.

The grocer is partnering with Feeding Northeast Florida to recognize September as Hunger Action Month with a drive-thru food pantry event for the community. Feeding America member food banks are lifelines for people who may not have access to a healthy meal, Winn-Dixie said. This is a part of Winn-Dixie's ongoing effort to fight food insecurity and to provide associates with the hands-on opportunity to positively impact communities in the Jacksonville area.
