That ripple effect caused millions to lose their jobs, and the unemployment system wasn’t enough to rescue unemployed workers from falling into the condition of food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of a lack of money and other resources. “When you break it right down, food insecurity is that you don’t know where your next meal will come from,” Feeding Northeast Florida CEO Susan King said. It shows 125,000 more people in the region will fall into the condition of food insecurity by November. Putting it into numbers, prior to the pandemic, Feeding Northeast Florida was processing about 50,000 pounds of food every day.

Cowford Chophouse and national egg producer Cal-Maine Foods have come to the rescue for the Jacksonville-based charity, donating 1.2 million eggs in the last three months. Thursdays donation of 312,000 eggs was the fourth made by the partners to Feeding Northeast Florida. The donation from Cowford Chophouse and Cal-Maine Foods will help Feeding Northeast Florida continue to address food insecurity and poverty through awareness, advocacy, education and action. Jacques and Tracy Klempf, co-owners of the Cowford Chophouse, have a long-standing relationship with Feeding Northeast Florida. In Florida, Cal-Maine has donated over 6,500,000 eggs, this year, including those to Feeding Northeast Florida.

The grocer is partnering with Feeding Northeast Florida to recognize September as Hunger Action Month with a drive-thru food pantry event for the community. Feeding America member food banks are lifelines for people who may not have access to a healthy meal, Winn-Dixie said. This is a part of Winn-Dixie's ongoing effort to fight food insecurity and to provide associates with the hands-on opportunity to positively impact communities in the Jacksonville area.
