JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – COVID-19 testing sites in East Arlington and Neptune Beach are seeing changes after city funding for the sites ran out. A city spokesperson said the city allotted a specific amount of federal funding for each vendor that operates City testing facilities. “This particular vendor [Telescope Health] exhausted the allotted funds,” the spokesperson said. The site will offer rapid, viral and antibody testing for both insured and self-pay patients with no appointment or referral necessary. The Neptune Beach site currently sees about 100 patients each day.

The new location inside Ed Austin Regional Park in East Arlington is the first of three the city plans to open this week. The next sites will open at the beach, and Mandarin. With the added capacity from city-operated testing, as as many as 5,000 people can be tested for COVID-19 in Jacksonville everyday. Testing at Ed Austin Regional Park will happen in the Jim Fortuna Senior Center, while testing at the Beaches site will take place at the former K-Mart shopping center on Atlantic Boulevard.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A fire broke out in a home in the Kensington residential community in East Arlington on the Fourth of July, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Crews responded to the 1800 block of Burges Hill Drive around 11:30 p.m., Saturday night, in reference to a house on fire. Within minutes, the responding rescue workers said the house was clear. The Red Cross has been called to assist two adults and one child. Fire Command has requested the State Fire Marshall to lead an investigation into the late night house fire.

Police arrested Pedro Navarro, 48, and charged him with murder. The shooting occurred on April 24. The man shot, who was not identified, died at a hospital during emergency surgery. Anyone with additional information in the shooting was asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 23-year-old woman was arrested Sunday following the early morning stabbing death of a man in the East Arlington area, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said. Police said Celaine Victoria Cuartero has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the unidentified man’s death. When they arrived, according to the Sheriff’s Office, police found a man suffering from a stab wound in a parking lot. Cuartero was detained at the scene and interviewed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 904-630-0500.

Jacksonville officers called to Tropic Drive East before 10 p.m. found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department took the man to a local hospital, he died during emergency surgery. News4Jax spoke with a neighbor who said he was putting his child to bed when he heard at least three gunshots. Lewis said this is the first time anything like this has happened in the six years he’s lived in the neighborhood.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A construction worker installing traffic signals Friday morning on North Kernan Boulevard in East Arlington was critically injured when a boom truck he was in hit a high power transmission line, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. The man operating the crane was doing electrical work for a subcontractor working on a Jacksonville Transportation Authority, tried to get off the truck but was shocked. Residents in the area heard what sounded like an explosion, smelled something burning and came outside to see what was happening. Sky4 aerials just before noon showed rescue personnel, Jacksonville police and a JEA crew were at the intersection of Kernan and Running River Road, which is north of Atlantic Boulevard. A previous News4Jax report on the JTA Mobility Works project said a 3-mile stretch of Kernan Boulevard between Atlantic Boulevard and McCormick Road was being widened, with new traffic lights, sidewalks and a bicycle path added.
