Residents of Hillcrest are raising concerns and calling for accountability from a local liquor store owner whose two security dogs frequently escape into the neighborhood.

What began as a routine outing for Luna, the 5-year-old pit bull, and her handler, Robert Colasanti, turned into an unexpected event that not only injured Luna but also led to the investigation of a Jacksonville Animal Control officer.

Putnam County Animal Services on Friday is holding a free adoption event after close to 200 dogs were found at a house in Interlachen earlier this week.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An emu was loose and on the run Thursday afternoon near Cassie Road on the westside, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed. One witness said the emu was chasing people around Hammond and Cahoon. Animal Control was also called to help wrangle the animal. Crews were able to corral the large bird and, using nets, move it into a waiting trailer around 1 p.m.

HILLIARD, Fla. – A Nassau County woman was arrested Wednesday and accused of shooting an arrow through a dog’s head using a crossbow, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office. Luckily, the dog survived the May 16 incident and was being treated by Nassau County Animal Control. Nassau County Animal Control Director Tim Maguire said the arrow ended up ricocheting off the dog’s skull and only lifting the skin. The Sheriff’s Office said the original owner turned over the right to the dog to Nassau County Animal Control due to the veterinary care that was needed.
