Rank, team, record, classification

1. Mandarin (4-0), Class 6A

Quality wins: Bartram Trail, Beachside, Fletcher, Nease.

Notable: The Mustangs were the wire-to-wire No. 1 last year as they went 19-0-2 before losing their only match to Mitchell in a 1-0 slugfest in the state championship game. Mandarin is primed for another deep run, led by reigning player of the year Emir Trto (6 goals, 2 assists) and Robert Calazans (4 goals). This team is once again, very, very good. Really difficult game on Friday at Creekside.

2. Creekside (5-0), Class 7A

Quality wins: Fleming Island, Fletcher.

Notable: The Knights lost just once to a local team last year (Beachside) and tied with No. 1 Mandarin. Sebastian Hernandez and Luke Amman have combined for seven goals during the unbeaten starts. Creekside is always a pick to reach the second round of the state playoffs.

3. Ponte Vedra (3-0), Class 5A

Quality wins: Bartram Trail, St. Augustine.

Notable: The Sharks were 13-4 a season ago before losing their playoff opener in overtime. They’ve got a couple quality Ws and have tough matches up next against Nease (Nov. 20) and Fleming Island (Dec. 1).

4. Beachside (4-1), Class 5A

Quality wins: None.

Notable: Solid start for the Barracudas, who are coming off a 14-4-2 season and second round playoff appearance. There’s enough returning on this team (this is Beachside’s first true senior class of athletes who have been at the school since they were freshmen) that another return to the playoffs is the expectation.

5. Bartram Trail (2-2), Class 6A

Quality win: Ridgeview.

Notable: They Bears have dropped back-to-back games to unbeaten teams in Mandarin and Ponte Vedra) and they’ve got a difficult upcoming stretch (West Orange, Fleming Island, Beachside). But Bartram went 13-4-5 last year before falling to Mandarin in the regional finals. They enter this season as one of the area’s teams expected to make a deep postseason run.

6. Fleming Island (0-1-1), Class 5A

Quality win: None.

Notable: The Golden Eagles are coming off a 15-2-6 season. They’ve got three big games coming up, with Beachside (Nov. 17), Bartram Trail (Nov. 21) and Ponte Vedra (Dec. 1). The Golden Eagles have a tie against Sandalwood (1-1) and a 2-1 loss to Creekside.

On the bubble
