Before the Storm: Protect What Matters Most
When a hurricane is approaching, the last thing you want to do is scramble. Take time now to review your insurance coverage and emergency plans.
- Check Your Dwelling Coverage (Coverage A): Ensure your policy covers the full cost to repair or rebuild your home—not just its market value.
- Review Your Personal Property Coverage (Coverage C): Replacement cost coverage helps you replace items at today’s prices, instead of their depreciated value.
- Understand Your Hurricane Deductible: Set aside funds so you’re prepared to cover your deductible in case of storm damage.
- Consider Flood Coverage: Flood damage—even from hurricane surge—requires a separate flood policy, typically available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Also, be sure to inspect your roof for loose shingles and clear your yard of any debris that could become dangerous in high winds. A quick check now can help prevent costly damage later.

After the Storm: Safety First
Once the storm has passed, your priority is safety:
- Stay Out of Floodwaters: They may contain hazardous debris, sewage, or downed power lines.
- Inspect Carefully: Don’t enter a building until it’s been cleared for electrical, gas, and structural safety.
- Food & Water Safety: Throw out spoiled or flooded food items. Boil or purify tap water before drinking until it’s declared safe.
- Clean & Disinfect: Floodwater often contains harmful bacteria and chemicals.
