Jacksonville mother, 2 children still looking for place to live after apartment fire

A local church offered a temporary home for Queen and her family, but needs volunteers to do flooring work.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.Sequenya “Queen” Akins and her two young children are still homeless after losing their apartment at the Desert Winds complex off Atlantic Boulevard to a fire.

Queen and her children, aged 6 and 10, are currently staying in a motel as they search for where to live.

Since News4JAX highlighted Queen’s story, her GoFundMe has reached over $12,000. Queen tells us she is extremely grateful for the community and their outpouring of support.

“The love that I feel from the community of Jacksonville is so overwhelming,” said Queen.

“So many people have showed up for us and I’m so thankful and I just want them to know how thankful I am,” she said.

But Queen and her family still need housing.

Christ the Living Cornerstone church in Jacksonville has reached out to News4JAX, offering a home for Queen and her kids to live in rent free as they look for something more permanent in the future.

The local church often houses families in need, but because of the last people who lived at the one home they have available, lots of damage was incurred.

The church has currently been using the home for storage, but the pastor tells us when they saw Queen’s need, they felt it was time to put the home to use.

The home is furnished, but it needs extensive flooring work, like carpet and tile, before Queen and her children can move in.

News4JAX is looking for experienced workers to donate their time to help Queen and her family. If you think you can help get the job done, send an email to our reporter, Sophia Vitello, svitello@wjxt.com to schedule the help and learn more.

The City of Jacksonville has also offered help to Queen, including the first month’s rent and a security deposit; however, so far, Queen has found it difficult to secure a place with realtors, especially because she is out of work due to health conditions like epilepsy, so she cannot show proof of income.

The funds from GoFundMe have not yet been released to Queen.

Many of you have been asking where to donate clothing and food. Ricketts Electric has generously offered their office to be a drop off site. It is located at 14476 Duval Place West, Suite 106, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
