THE VILLAGES, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday he will be proposing to the Florida Legislature a bill of rights to protect Floridians from the dangers of artificial intelligence.
During a news conference in The Villages, DeSantis said the bill of rights will fortify protections already in place about deepfakes and the use of explicit material, especially those that depict minors. He also said the legislation would make sure people’s data is protected.
It will also protect consumers from having their name, image and likeness in a way that can harm them.
“I really fear that if this is not addressed in an intelligent and proper way, you know, it could set off an age of darkness and deceit,” DeSantis said.
During the news conference, DeSantis was joined by Megan Garcia, who lost her teenage son after she said an AI platform encouraged him to take his life.
“I just think to yourself, what the hell is going on with this country? that this would be something that we would be allowing to happen. And so you’re seeing more and more of this,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis said the bill of rights will also ensure parents can access conversations their children have with chatbots.
“There will be notifications for parents required if the child exhibits concerning behavior,” DeSantis said.
