FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The City of Fernandina Beach is moving forward with efforts to save the Peg Leg Pete statue and is calling on the community to donate to the fundraiser.
The city initiated a fundraising campaign to raise $23,000 by Feb. 1, 2026.

A recently discovered insect infestation prevents the aging statue, which stands in front of the Amelia Island Museum of History, from being brought inside.
The money would support the statue’s restoration, but if the goal is not met, then the collected funds would be donated to the museum for the statue’s preservation and maintenance.
The city also said there will be an option for donors to receive a refund if requested.
As of Wednesday, a little over $1,300 has been raised.
In early September, an engineering inspection of the statue found the aging “Fernandina Pirate” unsafe for public interaction.
It once stood in front of the Amelia Island Welcome Center, but conversations called for the statue’s replacement following its rapid deterioration.
