JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Political analyst Rick Mullaney discussed President Trump’s recent decision to sign a bill releasing Jeffrey Epstein files, describing it as a strategic move.
“The president had two reversals and one reversal is easy to understand, and the other reversal is still a mystery,” Mullaney said. “He said, go ahead, release them... because he knew he’s going to lose.”

Mullaney noted the puzzling earlier opposition Trump had to releasing the files despite previously advocating transparency.
“For many years, he was an advocate for releasing the files... However, something happened and he became adamantly opposed,” Mullaney said. “We don’t really know why.”
He also reflected on the historic 43-day government shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, and its political implications.
“Shutdowns have caused significant damage... Did the Democrats pay a high price politically? In fact, they may have benefited by elevating the health care discussion,” Mullaney said.
He highlighted divisions within the Democratic Party over ending the shutdown, with progressives critical of moderates for conceding too early.
Mullaney also weighed in on ongoing redistricting battles, noting both parties seek political advantage.
“Neither the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party has the moral high ground here,” he said. “Each is seeking raw political advantage.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 midterms, Mullaney pointed to recent Democratic election sweeps in blue states and shifting voter support as warning signs for Republicans.
“The incumbent president always has trouble with those midterm elections,” he said. “President Trump’s approval ratings continue to slide. That’s ominous for what happens next November.”
He concluded by noting the political significance of affordability and health care in upcoming elections.
