According to investigators, deputies were called around 3 p.m. Monday by the 8-year-old girl’s mother, who could be heard yelling on the 911 call for someone to leave her home.
Deputies responded to the home on Reese Avenue in the Oakleaf area of Clay County and found a blood trail leading from the home to where the attacker had driven off in a car.
Investigators said they quickly learned that the 911 caller’s 62-year-old estranged biological mother had shown up at the home uninvited, got in through an unlocked door and tried to attack her with a serrated utility knife.
The caller was home with her two young children, and her 8-year-old daughter grabbed a kitchen knife to defend her mom, stabbing the grandmother in the upper arm, deputies said.
Investigators said neither the caller nor her two children were injured in the incident, so the blood trail had been left by the grandmother after she was stabbed by the child.
The grandmother drove off and returned to a home in Jacksonville where she had been staying with a friend, deputies said.
She was taken into custody by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and then transported to the Clay County Jail, where she is being held on a $500,003 bond on an attempted second-degree murder charge.
