JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman is dead after a house fire in Hidden Hills on Wednesday afternoon, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department confirmed with News4JAX.

JFRD said before crews arrived, several neighbors and two delivery drivers attempted to rescue the woman, but were unsuccessful because the flames were too intense.

“There was a lot of screaming before the fire department arrived,” Tim Nagy said. “Some people were trying to help the lady.”

“The Amazon driver was the first to see it. He came running over looking for a water hose in the front yard,” Max Thompson, a neighbor who tried to help, said. “I don’t know how the first started, but when we got there, the front door was open, she was halfway out, and the fire got more intense. We couldn’t get close enough to put a hand on her to get her.”

Max Thompson was the other neighbor who assisted in the attempted rescue, which he called a ”sad situation."

“It’s horrible,” Thompson said.

Her body was found on the front porch of the home, JFRD said.

Philip Orelli, JFRD District chief, said when the crew arrived, the blaze was coming out of the front door, so he understood why the men weren’t able to retrieve the woman.

It’s unclear how the fire started. The fire marshal is investigating.
