NAS JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The members of Patrol Squadron Eight returned to the loving arms of their families at Naval Air Station Jacksonville on Thursday morning -- and to the uncertainty of a federal government shutdown.

The “Fighting Tigers” just completed a successful 6-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.

Their welcome home gift, unfortunately, is a shutdown that means the active-duty service members won’t be paid until the shutdown ends.

That dark cloud added to Thursday’s emotional reunions but couldn’t stop the celebrations of the families eager to embrace their loved ones.

During their deployment, Patrol Squadron Eight operated from the waters of the Persian Gulf to the Western Pacific, flying P-8A Poseidon aircraft in critical missions during some globally tense moments.

Their work included anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, search and rescue, and working with other countries to strengthen international security.

In total, the squadron logged more than 3,500 flight hours — often working around the clock to fulfill their mission.

“I could not be more proud of the Fighting Tigers. Their performance reflects the very best of our force and our nation. The successful deployment was achieved through amazing sacrifice, including the unwavering support of our families and friends at home,” said VP-8 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Derrick Bruce. “The Fighting Tigers executed with precision and professionalism throughout the deployment, and the team’s efforts directly contributed to global security and the protection of our national interests. It is humbling to be part of such an outstanding team!”
