$30M in major changes underway to improve Wonderwood Expressway in Arlington

Construction is expected to finish in the fall

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Improvements continue on the busy Wonderwood Expressway, which connects Arlington and Mayport.

The $30 million investment that began in June 2022 stretches along seven miles of State Road 166 from Jane Street at Merrill Road to Sand Castle Lane at Wonderwood Drive and includes:

  • Roadway milling and resurfing
  • Base work
  • Drainpipe replacement
  • Curb and gutter improvements
  • Pedestrian safety improvements

Residents have noticed the constant construction over the past two years.

“It seems like it’s been 2 years since it’s been under construction this time,” said Samantha, who lives in an East Arlington neighborhood, just off the connector.

There have been lowered speed limits along the road. Around a decade ago, News4JAX responded to complaints of speeding in the area.

Now, some of the corridor’s speed limits have been lowered to 35 miles per hour.

But residents say — like with any busy road — traffic safety issues continue.

“Still an issue. The police can’t be everywhere, and people drive recklessly. Cut people off,” Eric Larson said.

Construction is expected to be completed in the fall.
